Pink Marshmallows Baby Hat to Match the Blanket

Thank you for your kind comments on my latest baby blanket pattern.

I now have a pattern for a matching hat.

Unlike most of the baby hats I've created before, this one is worked from bottom up.

The pattern comes in one size 0-3 months, and the finished hat measures about 12 inches in circumference and 5 inches in height.

I used a hook size G/6 (4.25 mm) and the same yarn as for the blanket - Snuggly Wuggly Big by Loops & Threads. In fact one skein was enough to make the blanket and the hat.

The pattern is available in my shops: Etsy, Craftsy, and Ravelry

Lacy Baby Blanket with Ruffled Trim and a Matching Hat

I often get emails or messages through my Etsy shop from people asking whether I take crochet commissions. Most of the time I don't.

I always have so many crochet (and now knitting!) projects of my own, that I can hardly find time for commissions. In addition, I've had some negative experiences in the past when the commissioner would just disappear.

Someone contacted me recently, and I was really moved to help this lady. It turned out she used to live in my city though now she lives in a different state. She needs two baby blankets for her friends' babies.
And I absolutely love working on baby items. There is just something very special and heartwarming about crocheting for new little angels.

She was also very kind to pay me upfront, which any crocheter who takes commissions greatly appreciates.

So this is the first set that I made!

Those of you who follow my blog would probably recognize the Lacy Baby Blanket pattern. It is the most popular pattern on my blog. And it also was the very first pattern that started me on my pattern writing path!

The pattern for the matching hat in size 3-6 months is also available free on my blog.

And I also have the pattern for the same hat in size 0-3 months

But you will notice that I made a different edging both on the blanket and the hat (my customer wanted a ruffled border). I don't have a written pattern for that, but this link could be useful

The yarn I used was Snuggly Wuggly by Loops & Threads, which is one of my favorite yarns for baby blankets. I used size E/4 (3.5 mm) hook for the blanket. For the trim I used a bigger, size G/6 (4.25 mm) hook as I wanted it to be very light and airy.

I am now working on the second blanket!

Newborn Hats for Charity

I am working on reducing my stash and since I have a lot of leftover acrylic baby yarn (small amounts left from making bigger projects like blankets and baby dresses), I decided to make a bunch of newborn hats to donate.

I have made tons of baby hats before, but this is yet another new pattern.

I like the ribbed texture it has. It can be made in one color, or a multitude of colors.

I've made half a dozen hats so far. But there is still so much yarn left. I will be making more!

Hat to Match the Blanket and Lots of Rain

I now made a baby hat to match the White Lace Blanket. It's very simple, featuring the same open stitch in the front.

I also have an idea for a baby dress with the same stitch, but I'm already working on another two projects. These days I simply cannot stop crocheting. And it's the rain to blame!

It's been pouring here in Northern California for days now! Which is good, of course, as we've been experiencing drought for too long.

My favorite place to crochet right now is on my bay window. This is the only place in the house that offers enough natural light for crocheting.

I use my mom's Czech crystal vase as a yarn bowl. When I saw it at her place, I was like: Hah, this would be perfect for keeping my yarn ball! Works great!

It's nice to stay inside, crochet, daydream, and watch the rain behind my window!

Calendula Baby Hat Crochet Pattern

Most of the patterns in my Etsy shop are baby hats. And I've been getting requests for new ones, which is a nice thing of course. It's nice to know my patterns are useful.

I finished this one just a couple of days ago. I named it Calendula Baby Hat. It's actually quiet difficult to come up with a unique name (a lot of patterns in my shop are simply names Baby Hat Pattern, which sometimes creates confusion for my customers).

When I picked a few Calendula flowers from my backyard to add as a back prompt for the photo, the name seemed to be right there. This hat is bright and cheerful but simple, just like Calendula flowers.

The pattern is for size 0-3 months (about 14 inches in circumference and 6 inches in height), but it can be adjusted to a bigger size simply by using a bigger size hook and/or heavier yarn.

I used category 3, baby yarn by Plymouth Yarn called Dreambaby DK.

The pattern is available in my Etsy shop

Flower Clusters Diaper Cover

I had another request for a diaper cover pattern that would match the blanket and the hat. So here is its.

It's quite simple and quick to make.

Delicate Lace Crochet Baby Hat, Free Pattern from Pinterest

I think this is one of the most beautiful crochet items I've ever made!

I made this hat for a friend's baby. I'm sure it will look adorable on her. I was thinking about adding a flower, but this lacy stitch is so beautiful, it doesn't really need any other embellishments.

I came across this symbol chart (crochet diagram) for this hat on Pinterest. Click here to see it.

I used super fine, category 1, cashmere yarn and a size D/3 (3.25 mm) crochet hook.
I can't say exactly how many yards of yarn I used. Not many, as the stitch is very open and light in texture.

I tried the pattern twice. The first time my hat was coming out too big. So at the second attempt, in first round I started with 12 dc in ring instead of 16.
The rest of the pattern worked out the same and my hat came out the right size I needed - about 16 inches in circumference and 6.5 inches in height.

I made a trim different from the one in the original pattern. I tried that one and I didn't like it. So I simply made a few rounds of single crochets.

This is not an easy pattern. It involves front post double crochets and crossed double crochets. And of course, it involves the ability to read/follow crochet charts.

Star Stitch White and Pink Baby Set, Baby Afghan and Baby Hat

When I made this baby blanket, I just knew it would look so much better in white. So here is a baby set that I made for a friend's baby.

I also added a flower appliqué both to the blanket and to the hat.

My very detailed pattern is available on Ravelry, Etsy, and Craftsy

Pink Clusters Crochet Baby Set

A couple of months ago I designed and wrote the pattern for this clusters baby blanket. And since then it's been on my mind to make a matching baby hat. Finally, here it is.

Quite simple clusters hat in size 0-3 months. The finished size is approximately 14 inches in circumference and 5.5 inches in height.

The pattern is available in my Etsy shop together with the blanket, or separately

Preemie Girls Baby Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Today I have a new preemie baby hat pattern to share. But before I get to the pattern, I want to share the story that inspired me to create these tiny preemie hats.

One of the customers from my Etsy shop bought all the preemie baby hat patterns that I have (shown on the photo below). She left me a note sharing that when her daughter was born she was quite small, but this Christmas she will turn twenty-one.

So Janet is going to make twenty-one preemie hats, and on the Christmas Eve day, she will take them to the neonatal ward at the hospital where her daughter was born.

I was touched by Janet's kindness and I also felt honored that she will be using my patterns.

While there are lots of free or paid baby hat patterns on the web, there are not that many patterns for premature babies. I hope my pattern will be useful and will inspire crocheters for acts of kindness just like Janet's.

For these hats I used Handicrafter crochet thread by Bernat. At the moment, it's my favorite thread to work with for baby and kids items. It's an acrylic thread that gives a soft and stretchy texture.

Simples Shells Baby Summer Hats

The weather is almost summer-like here in California, and I am in the mood for summer crochet projects.

I made these summer baby hats using 100% mercerized cotton (to be exact, I used Grace by Patons).

This is a simple and basic pattern. The finished hat can be decorated with crochet or fabric flowers of your choice, ribbons or buttons, or just left as it is.

The pattern is available in two sizes: 3-6 months, and 6-12 months.

It's available in my Etsy and Craftsy shops.

Delicate Shells Newborn Hat, My New Pattern

To make these hats I used category 1, super fine (fingering) yarn, and size E/4 (3.5 mm) hook.

The hats turned out super soft and delicate. They measure about 13 inches in circumference, and 4.5 inches in height, which would fit a newborn baby.

To make a bigger size baby hat, use a bigger size hook and heavier yearn.

The skill level for this hat is beginner, and only basic stitches are used - single crochet, double crochet, slip stitch, and chains.

The pattern is very detailed and easy to read/follow. It's available in my Etsy Shop

Soft Puffs Baby Beanie

Baby beanies are so much fun to design and make. I made this one is size 3-6 months. It measures 15 inches in circumference and 6 inches in height.

Usually I prefer working with smaller size hooks than recommended for a particular yarn, but for this hat I liked working with a big size hook (size H, 5.00 mm) as I wanted to achieve a very soft and light texture.

The yarn I used is Caron Simply Soft Party, about 100 yards.

The pattern for this baby beanie hat is available in my Etsy shop

Crochet Beret Hat for my Doll

Here is my second attempt at making a beret. You can see the first one here

I'm still working on the pattern. I want to rework it for a bigger size, so it will be suitable for a girl 5-10 years old. I also have an idea for a matching scarf.

I bought the doll shown in the pictures last year. She's so adorable, and makes a lovely model. I've been on the lookout for a new one, but couldn't find one yet. Crocheting for dolls is so much fun! It brings back childhood memories.

Lacy Vintage Bonnet, Free Crochet Pattern

I made this bonnet following a vintage pattern from Crochet for Your Baby and Knit Too! Star Baby Book 130 by American Thread Company, 1956.

I used a small amount of leftover category 1 yarn from my stash. I'm not sure what size hook I used. I just went alone with a steel hook that felt comfortable for this yarn. It's a vintage hook, and all it says on it is "Boye 1", and on the other side "U.S.A. 10 cents".

The finished size in the original pattern is 6 months, but my bonnet came out about the size 0-3 months. It fits my 20 inch doll perfectly.

I post the pattern exactly as it appears in the original publication. However, I added a few notes of mine.
In third rounds all it says is to increase 6 dc. So in green font in parenthesis, I wrote how exactly I made my increases.
Also I started my sixth round with a chain; I also indicated that in green font.

Otherwise, the pattern was easy to follow and I made my bonnet in one evening.

Chain (ch) 4, join to form a ring, ch 3 [counts as 1 double crochet (d c)], 13 d c in ring, join.

2nd Row. Ch 3, d c in same space, * 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join in 3rd stitch (st) of ch (28 d c).

3rd Row. Ch 3 and working in d c, increase 6 d c evenly spaced (34 d c). (ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc* 5 times, dc in last 4 dc)

4th Row. Ch 3, d c in same space, ch 1, 2 d c in same space, * skip 1 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 1, 2 d c in same space (shell), repeat from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch (17 shells).

5th Row. Slip stitch (sl st) in ch 1 space, ch 3, d c in same space, ch 1, 2 d c in same space, * 2 d c in next ch 1 space, ch 1, 2 d c in same space, repeat from * all around, join.

6th Row. (ch 1) 1 single crochet (s c) in same space, 1 s c in each of the next 7 d c, ch 3, shell in center of next shell, * shell in center of next shell, repeat from * 11 times (13 shells), ch 3, skip 2 d c, s c in next d c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 d c, do not join, place a marker at beginning of each row.

7th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, * shell in next shell, repeat from * 12 times, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each of next 8 s c.

8th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, ch 3, * shell in next shell, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, 1 s c in each remaining 10 s c.

9th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, ch 3, * shell in next shell, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each remaining 10 s c.

10th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 12 s c, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, ch 3, * shell in next shell, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each remaining 12 s c.

11th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 14 s c, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, ch 3, * shell in next shell, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each remaining 14 s c.

12th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 16 s c, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, ch 3, * 3 d c in center of next shell, ch 1, 3 d c in same shell, s c between shells, repeat from * 12 times, ch 3, 2 s c over next ch 3 loop, 1 s c in each remaining 16 s c.

Lace ribbon through shells of 11th row. Trim with ribbon rosettes as illustrated.
