Hydrangea Inspired Flowers

I love blue and purple hydrangea and was inspired to make crocheted hydrangea flowers. I used purple 100% acrylic yarn.
I am somewhat disappointed!

My flowers turned out pretty enough, yet they don’t quite look like hydrangea. The pearl beads are too big for my flowers (I didn’t glue them on, just laid them on for the picture). Next time I am at a crafts store, I should look for smaller purple or blue beads for my flower centers. The shape of the petals is not right either. The hydrangea petals are somewhat pointy, but I didn’t know how to achieve that effect in my crocheted flowers.

Here is the pattern anyway in case someone likes them. It’s extremely easy.

Ch 5, join with a slip stitch to make a ring.

*Ch 3, 2 tr in ring, ch 3, sc in ring* repeat from * three  times. Fasten off.

  1. Absolutely beautiful!!! And you're right, they need smaller perls! Just that...Don't be so strict with yourself!

  2. the smaller beads would be perfect..to make a point a the tip of your flower in crochet...you could...
for example, if you make the flower petals in sc, then at the tip you could use a larger say, try this,
sc,dc,sc in the same ch...or if you'd like a taller point try a tc.....the hydrangea's are lovely, and I really like the subtle changes of soft pink in there...so lovely..hope this helps....

  3. I think they're lovely! But maybe if you use a variegated yarn next time, it would look more like the original flower? Anyway, I like them and thanks for the tutorial!

  6. try to do (ch 3, 2 tr, ch 3, sc in ring) 5 times in your ring to get 5 petals. Just squish them around. If that doesn't work, try a ch 6 ring instead of a ch 5 ring. That way you can see if 5 petals looks more hydranges-like.

if you want more of a point, like the other person said, you want to try to have one stitch taller in the very middle. You might have to experiment with stitch combinations. My first thought is to just try to ch 1 or ch 2 in between your 2 trebles. My next thought would be to maybe try get some embroidery floss and make a french knot in the center in a periwinkle color to see if that gives more of the effect of the center of a hydrangea flower :).

  7. I think they are great. But if you want it more pointy, you might try doing 3 sts instead of 2 and do a dc, tr, dc (of course adding the ch 3 before and after) and that might give you a more pointy look.

  8. I wanted to try it to see if I could make a point at the top of each petal, and I think this had the best effect:
I made a picot in between the 2 tr.
To make the picot, ch 3 after first tr. Then sl st in first ch of ch 3, then do next tr.
You can see a couple of pics of my attempt here (just excuse the awful french knot, because I am not very good at them. I used baby yarn in lavendar because that is what I had on hand)

let me know what you think. I am also thinking that to make all the little petals of the hydrangea, cotton thread might work better, too.

  11. Oh, I forgot to tell you that doing a picot stitch at the top of the petals creates the pointy top you wanted for the petals. www.youtube.com shows you how to do it very simply.

    1. Do you mean attach to a crochet project like a hat or a baby dress? I just stitch them on with a regular needle and regular thread of matching color.
