Vintage Doily Disappointment

I was very excited about this doily. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out the way I'd like it.

The problem is there seems to be too many stitches between the "leaves" (I covered them with rose petals for the sake of the picture, but you can still see what I mean). I noticed it when I was still crocheting the doily, but I hoped blocking would take care of that. But when the doily was finished I realized that blocking won't help. So I'm going to unravel this doily, which is a pity!

I wouldn't recommend this doily, so I won't even bother posting the pattern.

Did it ever happen to you? You find a pattern that seems awesome, but the final result is very disappointing :(

Fortunately, I'm working on another project as well, and it's turning out wonderfully.

Have a nice weekend without any disappointments!

  1. I think it looks very pretty, but I know what you mean. I just recently made a lap quilt top and did not like how it looked and took the squares apart. I am glad I was able to do it before I sewn the backing and batting to it.

  2. I had the same problem. Sometimes I see that the pattern is not perfect when I look at the original doily. Now when I see that the doily is not flat I modify the pattern.

  3. Hi Olga! I'm hoping you check your comments because I don't really know any other way to get in touch with you. First, let me preface this by saying your work is absolutely stunning. I'm very new to crochet and hope I can become half as good as you one day. My question is in regard to a post you made in 2011 for a crocheted angel. I've been looking for a pattern for an angel so I could give one to my mom for Christmas and was ecstatic when I saw yours come up just now on Pinterest. The problem is you tweaked your pattern from someone else and to be frank, yours is prettier and has cleaner lines. Do you by any chance still have your pattern and would you be willing to share that? Also is it a pattern a beginner could accomplish? Thanks so much and I do apologize for bothering you here, but I didn't see a contact me button. Have a lovely day!

    1. Hi D, thank you for your kind words and compliments about my crochet work.
It's been four years since I made those angels, and no I don't have any notes written on how I changed the pattern.
But from looking at the picture, I can tell that I made the head differently. I made a small ring (probably 4-5 chains), and made 16 dc in ring. Then in the 2nd round I made alternatively *dc in dc, 2 dc in dc* around.
The body of the angel seems to be the same as in the pattern.
Then I added a row of dc2tog clusters on the wings.
I'm sorry, I cannot provide any more specific instructions. As I said it's been a long time, and I didn't have anything written down. Back then I was only learning to read English/American crochet instructions.
All the best, and good luck,

      Olga

    2. Thank you so much for responding back to me. I can absolutely appreciate that a lot has gone on in 4 years so knowing what stitched you did where in the pattern was a tough thing for me to ask for. However, I'm definitely going to try what you did mention and see if I can make anything that resembles an angel. I'll probably start themin a couple weeks, but if they turn outm I'll send you a picture. I'm thrilled to have someone else as an amazing resourse so available. Thank you so much and have an amazing day!

  7. What if instead of unraveling the finished doily, use this to correct the next doily by adjusting the number of stitches where the flaw occured. The pattern is pretty and those extra stitches can be omitted on the corrected doily. You make beautiful work. Thanks for sharing the patterns.
