Lace Edging for a Handkerchief, Simple Crochet Pattern

As I cleaned my crafting supplies shelves recently, I found a few handkerchiefs. I bought a whole bunch of them a while back. I added crochet lace to some, and I posted about it before.

And now I'm going to add some lace to the remaining ones and give them away as gifts.

I was going to add an edging from a vintage book that I have, but vintage patterns are not always easy to follow. So I just came up with my own lace edging.

I used very thin thread, DMC size 8, and a very small, 0.75 mm steel hook.

Round 1: sc evenly around; join with sl st.

Round 2: ch 1, sc in same space as joining, ch 3, *skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3* around; join with sl st.

Round 3; sl st in next ch-3 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-space, *ch 5, sc in next ch-3 space, 5 dc in next ch-3 space, sc in next ch-3 space* around; join.

Round 4: sl st in next ch-5 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-5 space, {ch 1, dc in next dc} five times, ch 1, *sc in next ch-5 space, {ch 1, dc in next dc} five times, ch 1* around; join.

Round 5: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in same ch-1 space, *ch 3, sc in next ch-1 space* around; join.

Fasten off.

  1. Olga! These are the most dainty and feminine things I have ever seen in my life! I always carry an old fashioned ladies hankie in my purse. I have a collection of them. A secret love of mine.
You and I are birds of a feather, my dear.
    Bless you,
    Danette

  5. Thank you for sharing you design. A while back I came across napkins that I bought to embroider. This edging would work perfectly on them.

  9. I am working a hanky with the edging done in size 80 tatting thread. The only change I’ve had to make so far, I’m on row 3, is to add a chain on either side of the 5 double crochets. It was a bit too tight without it. Wish I could post a photo. It’s going to be sweet.

  10. Oh, and I’m using a size 14 hook and the cotton is a pastel veriagated that belonged to my sister’s mother-law. As we are in our mid 60’s, the cotton is very old!

  11. How many yards of thread makes one hankie?

    1. I used one spool of DMC, size 8 thread. It was a long time ago, and now I'm not sure how much it was in yards.

  14. Hi there, Olga!!!
Am getting on in years now, and haven't crocheted/knit/sewed in quite awhile now. I taught all 3 of our children--2 girls & 1 boy. My girls continue to make beautiful things to give away to others. However, I've have a special gift for a young woman who gets married right after Christmas 2020. For her wedding day, I found a beautiful handkerchief--much like the one you have posted above. I was looking for a simple, yet elegant, trim for the handkerchief and, when I saw it, I KNEW IT WAS THE "ONE!" Sooo thank YOU for posting the pattern AND allowing us to use the pattern gratis!!! GOD BLESS YOU!!! Enjoy the rest of your day!!!

  16. I would love to use this as a border on a flannel baby blanket, but I'm not smart enough to figure out the repeat. How many stiches are necessary to complete the pattern so that I can make sure I punch enough holes in my flannel to make the pattern end where it started.

  17. Does it matter how many single crochet I evenly space? Does it have to be a multiply of something?

    1. I just wrote down the pattern for visual reference, and it looks like it's a multiple of 3.
