Pineapples and Fans Doily, Table Topper, My New Crochet Pattern

The Holidays are just around the corner, and I am sure many of you are working on gifts for family and friends.

I wanted to make a big doily for a friend. I've made so many doilies in the past and I have lots of patterns on my blog, but I didn't want to use any of them. I wanted something new!

So I came up with something new!

I made the white doily first and wrote down the pattern. Then I made the pink one to test my pattern.

So one of these doilies will be for my friend, and the other one for me.

The white one is classic. The pink one looks great on my dresser!

So not only I made a Christmas gift for my friend, but also for myself!

I named this doily pattern Pineapples and Fans. There are 33 rounds, and the finished doily measures about 21 inches in diameter. It's a pretty big size doily or table topper.

About 380 yard of cotton thread size ten, such as Aunt Lydia's, are needed. That's a little bit more than a standard roll, which is 350 yards.

The hook is 1.5 mm.

The skill level is intermediate. It's not so much about difficult stitches (there aren't any really), but about being able to read each row very carefully and following the instructions.

The pattern is available for sale in my Etsy, Craftsy and Ravelry shops.

Round V Stitch Dishcloth with Scalloped Trim, Grace by Patons Yarn, Free Crochet Pattern

A friend asked for help making a round dishcloth. She said she searched all over the Internet, but couldn't find exactly what she wanted - a round dishcloth made with V-stitch and possibly with a scalloped edging.

That felt like a challenge! Can I come up with such a dishcloth?

Sure I can!

*smile*

I hope my friend Ann and others will enjoy this pattern!

I used one skein of Grace by Patons yarn, which is 100% mercerized cotton, color Lavender, about 130 yards, and a size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook.

My dishcloth came out 11 inches across. To make it smaller, simply skip a few rounds and go straight to the last one (the scallop round).

V-stitch: (dc, ch 1, dc) worked all in the same space or stitch.

In this pattern, V-stitches are worked either
  • into V-stitches of the previous round (that is, into ch-1 space between 2 dc) or
  • into space between two V-stitches of the previous round (that is, into space prior to next V-stitch).

Ch 5, join in ring with sl st.

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 15 dc in ring, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same space as joining, 2 dc in each dc around; join. (32 dc)

Round 3: ch 4 and dc in same space as joining (counts as 1st V-st), skip next dc, *V-st in next dc, skip next dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (16 V-st)

Round 4: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space (counts as 1st V-st), V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 4 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (20 V-st)

Round 5: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space (counts as 1st V-st here and in the following rounds), V-st in next V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 2 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (30 V-st)

Round 6: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in each V-st around; join. (30 V-st)

Round 7: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in next 2 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (40 V-st)

Round 8: same as Round 6. (40 V-st)

Round 9: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 4 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (50 V-st)

Rounds 10-11: same as Round 6. (50 V-st)

Round 12: sl st in next ch-1 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, hdc) all in same ch-1 space, *(sc, ch 3, 2 dc, hdc) all in next V-st* around; join to 1st scallop. (50 scallops)

Fasten off.

Simple Crochet Hooded Scarf

I made myself a hooded scarf.
Here in Northern California I hardly ever wear hats. The weather is hardly ever that cold.
But I also don't like hats as they mess up my hair.

But this hood will be useful! When I walk my youngest son to school at 7:45 each morning, it's so cold out there. By noon, it gets much warmer, and afternoons are summerlike.
That's the weather we have right now!

My Mom took these pictures. She visited my last week.
It was so nice to have her here. I cherish every moment spent with my Mom.

The pattern is available in my shops: Etsy, Ravelry, Craftsy

Caron Simply Soft Lace Scarf Free Crochet Pattern

I had some leftover Caron Simply Soft Yarn in peach color, so I made a lacy scarf.

I can't say exactly how many yards it took. I don't think it was a full skein. If I had a bit more of the yarn, I would've made my scarf longer and added some fringe.

As it is, my scarf measures 57 inches long and 9.5 inches wide.

I worked with size H/8 (5 mm) hook.

The lacy pattern looks somewhat complicated, but it's quite easy actually. After the first couple of rows, you only need to repeat one row.

The pattern looks the same on both sides.

Ch 45.

Row 1: dc in 7th ch from hook (skipped ch count as 1st dc and ch 1), *ch 1, skip next ch, dc in next ch* across. (21 dc, 20 ch-1 spaces)

Row 2: ch 5, turn (count as 1st dc and ch 2), skip next (second) dc, *(sc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next dc, skip next dc, sc in next dc, ch 5, skip next dc* across, sc in last dc (that's basically 3rd ch of turning ch).

Row 3: ch 5, turn (counts as 1st dc and ch 2), *skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 3 ch, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 5* across, ending with sc in last dc (that's basically 3rd ch of turning ch-5).

Repeat Row 3 until desired length.

Next Row: ch 6, turn (counts as 1st dc and ch 3), *skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next ch-3 space, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 3* across, ending with sc in last dc.

Last Row: ch 4, turn (counts as 1st dc and ch 1), *dc in 2nd (middle) ch of next ch-3, ch 1, dc in next sc, ch 1* across, ending with dc in last dc.

Fasten off.

Add fringe if desired.
