Royal Pineapple Table Topper

Do I really need another doily? I already have a whole bunch of them. I already gifted away another bunch. And I even tried selling them, but no one wants to buy.  And yet I just can’t stop this obsession of making new ones.

I’ll tell you my secret. Sometimes I crochet a doily just for the sake of crocheting, taking photos and sharing them on my blog. Then I unravel it and use the thread to make another one.

As I was crocheting this big pineapple doily, its fate was supposed to be the same. Even as the doily was finished, I still was determined to unravel it. Until...

until I took these pictures! My goodness, it’s so romantic, so delicate, and so dreamy.

I can’t bring myself to unraveling this beauty. So it too will go into my drawer of doilies. And it probably will be a long time before it sees the daylight again.

Now to the technicalities.

I used a steel crochet hook size 4 and crochet cotton thread size 10. The doily came out about 29 inches across from tip to tip.

This was a vintage pattern from Complete Book of Crochet, The Spool Cotton Company, 1946. This is Pineapple Doily number 7275-M.

I believe this pattern is in the public domain now, so I post it below (please, let me know if I’m wrong, and I will remove the pattern right away).

  1. This so beautiful and too pretty to unravel! Please don't do that, I love it so much! You do such an amazing job and my aunt used to do the pineapple stitch for all our pillow cases. You are so talented and it amazes me. Take care. Julie

  2. Oh, it is so beautiful! I think you should keep all of you lovely pieces and never unravel any. Someone will cherish each piece you make. I cherish things made by my mom and grandmother.

  3. All those instructions look like hieroglyphics to me, but that is one gorgeous topper! I have also found that people expect to pay a shockingly low price for these handmade beauties. I'm glad you're going to keep it!

  8. I love to make doilies! And you are right no one wants them. There's is something soothing about sitting quietly and counting stitches. I've recently found some second hand books with table clothes, bedspreads, and table settings made from thread crochet. I think I shall venture into that area with thread. A friend is making a large round table cloth with that similar pineapple pattern. Ok. I am rambling.. I'm just excited to find someone that enjoys making doilies as much as I. :)

    1. I love these I'm a crochet nut self taught and not very good, however I've been looking for a beginners pattern for a tablecloth. I do have hand made doilies all over my home, old fashioned I guess but a house to me isn't a home with out doilies and tablecloths. I don't think I'm old 58 but I always remember them in older people's homes. I can't afford to buy them even tho I love them so much so I'm going to try making them

    2. Hi Renee,
I'm 34, and I'm simply obsessed with doilies. I don't really have any on display around the house, except for my china cabinet in the dinning room, it has doilies on every shell. But I also have a huge draw of doilies, and occasionally I pull out one if I have a friend coming over for tea. I live in California, and I have flowers blooming in my yard almost year around. So a doily, a few fresh flowers, tea and some sandwiches or sweets, and there I have a simple but beautiful and enjoyable getting together with a friend.
Best of luck crocheting your doilies.

  14. Hi Olga

Its such a lovely doily. I so so love it. I can't believe, someone unravels a crocheted piece to use the thread again and make another! Oh My! so much of effort and time goes into one. Please don't unravel any. Think of me, if you get tempted to unravel a doily. PLEASE.

    Have a nice week end.

  15. This is so pretty!!! I've been looking for the right pineapple project for the last three months, something truly old-fashioned and dainty, and I think this might be the one :) Thanks SO very much for sharing the pattern!

I started working with thread last year and now have a "doily drawer" too, LOL, but I do believe that I will find the perfect home for them one day ;) I agree with everyone else that it's a shame to unravel your gorgeous work, but I also realize that thread isn't free. Have you tried thrift-store shopping? I find a lot of mine that way, and have been able to get some beautiful vintage colours that just aren't made these days!

    1. Hi Aurelia, thanks for stopping by and your kind comment.
Yes, occasionally I do thrift-store shopping and find some nice threads and yarns. I also keep an eye for other craft supplies there.

  18. Hi I was just wondering why on round 27 it says to break yarn when the doily is not finished yet?

  19. I am encountering a problem around 13th or 14th row. I have an extra she'll at the end of the round. Could the numbers be off? I made sure the count was 22 DC groups at the beginning. I am thinking it is supposed to be 21 d groups..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  21. Thank you for this, I was looking for something easy to crochet for my holiday table. I'm older now so it's not as quick and easy as it used to be, but this is beautiful and looks easy enough. Thanks again.

  22. Is there a way to upsize this for a full ~70 inch tablecloth? I am an experienced knitter but while I know HOW to crochet and have done some shawls and such before I don't know how I would continue this pattern to make a larger tablecloth. Any advice or nudge in the right direction (or right website/video) would be appreciated.

    1. Hmm, I don't really know. I guess if I were to try making it bigger, I'd add another round of "pineapples". But they would have to be larger in size, which probably won't look that great. Sorry, I can't really think of anything.
Are you comfortable with crochet charts/diagrams? There are plenty of them to tablecloths on Pinterest.
