Round V Stitch Dishcloth with Scalloped Trim, Grace by Patons Yarn, Free Crochet Pattern

A friend asked for help making a round dishcloth. She said she searched all over the Internet, but couldn't find exactly what she wanted - a round dishcloth made with V-stitch and possibly with a scalloped edging.

That felt like a challenge! Can I come up with such a dishcloth?

Sure I can!

*smile*

I hope my friend Ann and others will enjoy this pattern!

I used one skein of Grace by Patons yarn, which is 100% mercerized cotton, color Lavender, about 130 yards, and a size F/5 (3.75 mm) hook.

My dishcloth came out 11 inches across. To make it smaller, simply skip a few rounds and go straight to the last one (the scallop round).

V-stitch: (dc, ch 1, dc) worked all in the same space or stitch.

In this pattern, V-stitches are worked either
  • into V-stitches of the previous round (that is, into ch-1 space between 2 dc) or
  • into space between two V-stitches of the previous round (that is, into space prior to next V-stitch).

Ch 5, join in ring with sl st.

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 15 dc in ring, join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in same space as joining, 2 dc in each dc around; join. (32 dc)

Round 3: ch 4 and dc in same space as joining (counts as 1st V-st), skip next dc, *V-st in next dc, skip next dc* around; join with sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (16 V-st)

Round 4: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space (counts as 1st V-st), V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 4 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (20 V-st)

Round 5: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space (counts as 1st V-st here and in the following rounds), V-st in next V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 2 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (30 V-st)

Round 6: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in each V-st around; join. (30 V-st)

Round 7: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in next 2 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (40 V-st)

Round 8: same as Round 6. (40 V-st)

Round 9: sl st in next ch-1 space, ch 4 and dc in same ch-1 space, V-st in next 3 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round, *V-st in next 4 V-st, V-st into next space between two V-st of previous round* around, join. (50 V-st)

Rounds 10-11: same as Round 6. (50 V-st)

Round 12: sl st in next ch-1 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, hdc) all in same ch-1 space, *(sc, ch 3, 2 dc, hdc) all in next V-st* around; join to 1st scallop. (50 scallops)

Fasten off.
