Fall Is Coming: 6 Crochet Projects to Make

 The change of season has brought me a lot of new crochet motivation and inspiration. 

So today I thought I would share six crochet ideas that I think would be perfect for fall. Some are projects I’ve already made, some I’m currently working on, and a few are on my list to make next.

1. Crochet Socks

Let’s start with something practical: crochet socks.

Socks are one of my favorite things to crochet when the weather starts getting cooler. They are small enough to be a manageable project, but they are also something you can actually use and enjoy.

Right now I’m making a pair using hand-dyed yarn that is 85% merino wool and 15% nylon, and I’m really enjoying working with it. 

If you’ve never crocheted socks before, autumn might be a good time to give them a try. And if you already enjoy making them, fall is the perfect excuse to make another pair!

2. A Cozy Crochet Blanket

A cozy blanket is probably one of the first things that comes to mind when I think about fall crochet.

There is something very comforting about working on a blanket as the days become cooler. You can keep it next to your favorite chair and add a few rows whenever you have some quiet time.

You also don’t have to finish a blanket quickly. In fact, I think blankets are one of the best projects for slow crochet. You can work on them for a few days, put them aside, and come back whenever you feel like it.

For an autumn blanket, you could choose traditional fall colors like rust, mustard, olive, cream, and brown, or go in a completely different direction with colors you simply love.

The most important thing is choosing a combination that makes you want to keep picking up your hook.

3. Crochet Maple Leaves

If you’re not in the mood for a big project, crochet maple leaves are another fun fall idea.

I made these leaves using YarnArt Begonia, a 100% mercerized cotton yarn, and they are about 7 by 6 inches.

They can be used as coasters, added to a garland, used as appliqués on other projects such as cushion covers, or used in whatever way your imagination comes up with.

4. Crochet Pumpkins

Of course, no fall crochet list would be complete without pumpkins!

Crochet pumpkins are such a fun seasonal project, and they don’t have to be complicated.

You can make them in traditional orange, but I also love the idea of using cream, brown, rust, green, or any other colors that fit your home.

And don’t be afraid to experiment with different yarns. A soft velvet yarn, chunky yarn, cotton, acrylic, or even a yarn with a little sparkle can give you a completely different-looking pumpkin. 

Of course, you can find plenty of pumpkin patterns and tutorials online, so there is something for just about every skill level.

I made this pumpkin last year. I used front post and back post double crochets to achieve the ribbed texture. 

5. An Autumn Doll

This next idea came from a completely unexpected place.

I was shopping at HomeGoods and saw an adorable autumn-themed doll. It immediately made me think that it would be fun to crochet something similar myself.

I love when everyday things inspire crochet ideas.

You don’t always have to look at crochet patterns for inspiration. Sometimes a decoration in a store, something you see outside, or an interesting combination of colors can make you think, I could crochet that. 

An autumn doll could be a fun project if you enjoy making amigurumi or little decorative figures. You could create your own version and change the colors, clothing, hairstyle, or accessories to make it completely yours.

I purchased this doll and plan to use it as a reference for the sizing and shaping of my own crochet version.

6. A Pumpkin Hat

And finally, this last idea might resonate with those of you who have a baby in your family.

I would love to make one for my baby niece this fall. 

The idea actually came from a cute pumpkin-themed baby hat and diaper set I saw at HomeGoods. I think crocheting a similar pumpkin hat would be quite easy, and probably even a beginner could make one.

I didn’t purchase it but snapped a picture. I’m going to crochet a similar pumpkin hat. 

So those are my six crochet ideas for fall.

Some of these projects are already on my hook, some are finished, and a few are still waiting for me to get started.

I have to admit, I love being in one of those periods when crochet inspiration seems to be everywhere. After going through times when I didn’t feel particularly motivated to crochet, it feels especially nice to have so many ideas again.
